Job 1 - 37 hours - Substantive
Job 2 - 24 ½ hours – Temporary up to Nine Months to Cover Maternity Leave

Two jobs are currently available for Advocacy and Participation Officer with Kirklees Council’s Children’s Rights Team. One is permanent and substantive and the other is on a fixed term, not to last more than nine months to cover maternity leave. These are challenging and varied jobs, ideal for someone looking to make a positive impact on the lives of children. If you are looking for a career which includes empowering children and young people and helping them to affect service provision then this is a great opportunity for you.  Job 1, permanent, full time, will see you leading on the co-ordination of young people who come together every other week to discuss issues for children in care and care leavers and look at how service provision can be improved.  You will also be responsible for organising and delivering the Annual Achievement Award Ceremony, celebrating the achievements of young people in care who are aged 16 plus. Both successful applicants will be providing individual advocacy support to children and young people in Kirklees.

To find out more about these opportunities, job seekers are encouraged to contact Recruiting Manager Melanie Tiernan on 01484 221000.

You will be:

  • Working directly with individual children and young people and making a difference in their lives.
  • Working with groups of children and young people, co-ordinating regular groups to help them to effectively influence service provision.
  • Providing advocacy and support to children and care leavers with the support of your manager.
  • Listening to what children say and helping them to voice their own needs, keeping the voice of the child at the centre of all the work you do.
  • Part of a team who are child centred and committed to ensuring that the voice of the child is heard and listened to throughout all aspects of their care.

To be considered for this job you must:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting children’s rights, participation and advocacy, using past experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with children and young people both individually and in a group situation.
  • Have the ability to work two evenings every two weeks (Monday & Wednesday) up to 7pm as well as other evenings, as needed, and occasional Saturday mornings (Job 1) and to work until 5:30 pm on a fairly regular basis and until 7:00 pm on a less regular basis (Job 2) depending upon the needs of the service.
  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required for this job.  A conviction may not exclude candidates from appointment but will be considered as part of the recruitment process.
  • Travel is an essential part of the job and therefore it would be extremely difficult for you to do your job effectively if you did not use a car for all or most off the time. It is essential that you hold a full and valid driving license and it is expected that you will use a council vehicle or your own car (exceptions can be made for disabled applicants).

Job 2

To apply for job 2 as a secondment you must be a substantive employee of the Council with over 6 months continuous service and have successfully completed your probation period.  Applications for secondments will only be accepted if accompanied by a completed Secondment Permission Form, signed by your manager.  If you are refused permission to apply for a secondment please contact HR Recruitment to register the refusal.

In order to be shortlisted for either job please demonstrate in your application how you meet the Person Checklist.
